People
need to be well informed about HIV/AIDS and STI’s. Greater understanding
and awareness should remove irrational fears and myths and lead to supportive
attitudes towards infected people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.
Programme
objectives: - Equip participants with the necessary skills
and knowledge
- To empower participants to influence attitudes and behaviour
of others.
- To understand and facilitate the ongoing usage of the monitoring
information systems.
- To build internal capacity within the organisation.
Peer Educators are trained on the 80 modules that are available on the AIDS
Solutions programme and are left with all resources necessary to be effective
trainers and to train and empower their peers.
- To enhance the basic and
specific understanding of HIV/AIDS concepts and principles.
- To increase
the level of understanding of the existing - and potential - impacts of HIV/AIDS
within the organisation.

Historical background of HIV/AIDS, modern myths and misconceptions- HIV/AIDS
The basics: Adult learn best when they explore from the “known”
facts into the “unknown”. During this module ,students explore the
definition of HIV and AIDS, setting the scene for the workshop.
- HIV
and Statistics: A global overview as well as statistics for workshop
- Modes
of HIV transmission: The basic principles of transmission, body fluids
and risk behaviour is dealt with.
- Legal aspects: The
right to confidentiality, HIV testing and the rights in the workplace.
- Attitudes,
responsibility and culture. Behaviour and behaviour change
- Sex and sexuality
- Care and treatment
- Living with HIV/AIDS
- Counselling:
Pre and post test counselling
- HIV/AIDS in the workplace-How HIV+ employees
are protected, employee benefits with relation to HIV/AIDS, the code of Good Practice
on key aspects of HIV/AIDS and employment
